Syllabus Detail Draft
- Factors influencing the performance of a network 12 ATAR
Background
- Networks are created to give people access to resources in the business, school and home environments.
- These resources can provide access to printers, to data, to the internet and much more.
- A network is a complicated thing and needs to have the correct hardware, software and setup for it to work efficiently.
Bandwidth
- Used with download and upload when using the internet.
- How much data can be transferred in a period of time.
- It is measured in bits per second (bps), megabits per second (Mbps)
Network Design
- The design aspects of the network which ensure that it is running at optimal performance including: Survivability, Traffic engineering, Dimensioning.
- Is there adequate hardware?
Data Collisions
- Packets of data can collide if the network is congested and when this occurs the data is lost.
- The whole packet is required to send again.
- This slows down the network decreasing the performance.
- Methods to reduce this performance loss include CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA
Excess Broadcast Traffic
- This means having more data on the network than it was designed for.
- Excess means having too much and broadcast traffic means data on the network.
- An example in a school of excess broadcast traffic is if all the students in the school all watched a different youtube video at the same time.
