Background
- Both SAN and NAS are designed for networks.
- They give storage.
NAS or Network Attached Storage
- The role is to provide a location on a network for users to save files to .
- This is common in medium to large size LANs
- It is a single device just to save data to.
- Usually located in the server room.
- It is given a storage address drive name, eg H: drive on windows, or a name on Mac server like Student Home Drives
- Users on the network can save files to a NAS.
SAN or Storage Area Network
- The role is to provide a location in a server, for the server to write files to.
- It is a drive in the server that the server writes data to.
SAN / NAS Differences
- Users of the network can see the NAS drive to write to.
- SAN is used by the server, not people directly.
- NAS is a separate device, SAN is part of a server.
SAN / NAS Similarities
- Both give storage on a network.
